The movement initiated four years ago is now a global effort. Its base purpose is bringing people, especially those of African heritage, together, united in an endeavor to act in various forms to promote justice and equality for everyone and their communities.
One of the base missions of the project is the fight against systemic racism that has unfortunately spread throughout history and carved itself into modern society. Light has been increasingly directed towards this specificity of racism. It is the result of a cultural inequality complex integrated into society for so long that non-inclusive ideals such as white superiority can be captured not only in everyday thinking but at a systemic proportion, in which society as an entity can be racist towards the operating system. Some examples are disparities in laws, regulations, and unquestioned social systems. Inequalities like these affect about 12% of the American population, which is composed of black African-Americans, and more than half of the Brazilian population.
Furthermore, there has also been a recent discussion about the movement’s name. The reasoning for “Black lives matter” and not “all lives matter” is to reinstate as much as possible the importance of Black people, importance that needs to be now emphasized as a consequence of the historical devaluation of Black lives in society. It is also very important to reinstate that the movement’s name does not imply a devaluation of any other group or culture.
